Whilst visiting Sydney and strolling down Hyde Park I couldn’t help but notice this beautiful Cathedral. I just had to get a closer look at what to me is the most beautiful building I have seen for some time.
The building turned out to be St, Mary’s Cathedral. It was designed in 1865 by William Wilkinson Wardell, but the spires themselves were not completed until it’s Jubilee Year 2000.
It’s not surprising, being Sydney and all, that St. Mary’s has it’s own web page which is full of information including Mass times, and a history of the church.
While this is a fairly good shot of St Mary’s Cathedral it looks a little cluttered because there is too much going on in the background.

I find this next shot makes the cathedral stand out so much more, as it should.

Next post I’ll show you some shots of the beautiful interior.

It’s amazing to me how much money they spend on these things. That’s absolutely beautiful, I could imagine living in it. Perhaps some archers in the turrets. Don’t worry, that won’t attack photographers.

I don’t think they’re that sort of turret, still you can always dream ;)
Looks good, now it just needs 500 years to age nicely!
:)
Considering the first settlers didn’t arrive here until 26th Jan 1788 I reckon you’ll be hard pressed to find any buildings that old in Australia.
These are beautiful photos, but the young age of the cathedral seems so odd after recently seeing Notre Dame!
Yeah, being hundreds of years apart I reckon it would have that effect.
Being from england, we do not see many new cathedral/church buildings like this. That is why it seems strange seeing a new building of this style.
It may be new from your standards Darren, but we consider it a lovely old building, considering the age of our country and all
Sorry if I offended you guys. Still a beautiful building :)
No offense taken mate. :)
It’s a nice cathedral, but I think it looks like the horizon isn’t quite straight? Minor detail. But what really ruins the picture, is your watermark – sorry :( Do you often have your pictures abused/stolen, since you add that?

That’s probably because I wasn’t standing dead center when I took the photo Klaus. As to the watermark, yeah it does spoil it some, but if someone wants a copy of the photo I can send them one minus the watermark for a small charge ;)
Crickey mate – I remember when that was just a building site. Lived in Sydney 96-97. I hear they built flats on the Duke of Cornwall!? I will be back!

That is such a beautiful catherderal. It makes me want to visit syndey even more. You are right your second pictures does look a lot less cluttered.
Nice shots! I like how the cathedral towers up to the clouds and blue sky in the background. I recently bought tons of postcards from a yard sale and I saw a card exactly like this one. I agree that it would look a lot better as the years would go by but I would also want to have a picture of it while it is still brand new.

Yep, the clouds do help to set it off. I reckon the modern Sydney buildings in the background give it a different perspective as well.
Cathedrals are some of the most architecturally incredible buildings. This one is certainly no exception. You’ve captured it very well, with the lighting and sky it’s slightly surreal. Impressive.
Thanks Tom, I appreciate the compliment.
Wow, it looks so much taller in the second one, too. So much more impressive.
I’ve been taking a lot of pictures lately–one horizonallty, the next vertically, just to see what I really think looks better in the end. This is something I did when I first started taking photos a lot a few years ago but I realized I hadn’t thought about it much lately. It’s amazing what a huge difference it can make!
You are so right Jennifer, you need to take shots from more than one angle or perspective just to make sure you get the best one.
All I can say is, whether the cathedral is old or new (speaking of age), one thing definitely stands out. This is a great art and a genius masterpiece.

U mean u took photos inside the cathedral?! I’ve had a bad experience when I was there recently. Coming inside the cathedral via the shop on one side of the building, I didn’t know that photography wasn’t allowed so I just took photos. One of the church ppl came up to me, holding up his mobile phone and said to me right away ‘you put those pictures that you took off or I’m going to call the police’. That wasn’t really the best way of adressing ppl esp in a church. And how would I know if they only put up the no photography sign at the main entrance?
Sure did Jipp, and I took my time about it too. I was very careful about it though. I knew I was in a church and so I acted accordingly. I was very quite and did all the right things like kneeling and doing the sign of the cross when passing the alter. No-one said anything.
I didn’t see any signs either. Are you sure he was a church official and not just some wanker? I’ve now pasted those photos too.

What a beautiful church. I do like the second pic better b/c there is less going on and your eyes can really focus on the church. Amazing job!
Thanks Greenies
Very nice shots! Me too, i prefer the second picture because it is clearer and nearer so we can see much better the beauty of the church..
yep, the more I think about it the more I’m liking the second picture.
