As I’ve mentioned in several posts I’ve been using a simple point and shoot camera, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX50, and although it takes stunning shots it can’t compete with the the Digital SLR cameras. I have therefore decided to see what DSLR cameras are on the market because as soon as I find the right one I’m going to buy it, and once I do I hope to post some really stunning photos.
The first one I’m looking at which is in the higher range price category is the Canon EOS 7D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3-inch LCD and 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens

Product Features :
- 18.0-megapixel CMOS Sensor and Dual DIGIC 4 Image Processors for high image quality and speed
- Kit includes 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM standard zoom lens
- Advanced HD movie mode with manual exposure control and selectable frame rates
- Intelligent Viewfinder with 100 percent field of view; 19-point, all cross-type AF system equipped with dual diagonal cross-type sensors
- Capture images to CF Card Type I and II, UDMA-compliant CF cards (not included)
One of the features I like about this camera is that it can take photo at 8fps which I assume means there is very little shutter lag, something I dislike about many of the digital cameras that I’ve used.
Even though it is able to shoot full HD video this doesn’t interest me as I have a great Sony camcorder that I use for that. I suppose though it may come in handy as I don’t always have my camcorder on me.
Another feature that I like is Canon’s new built-in Dual Axis Electronic Level which shows both horizontal roll and vertical pitch making it really easy to get nice level shots while shooting. I hate taking photos only to find out when seeing it on the computer that it’s not quite level.
The 3inch LCD display is also a bonus as you’ll get a clearer picture of how you’re framing the shot. Also although the camera is capable in taking photos in very low light conditions the built is flash is sure to come in handy. All in all this looks like a really good camera.
The FlexSqueeze Theme gives my blog that professional look. I loved it so much that I bought the developers license. It's the easiest most customizable theme I've come across. See how easy it is to change your theme's appearance! Compare it to Thesis to see how much better it is! I am so thrilled with this theme that I highly recommend you to get your FlexSqueeze theme today! Like this post? Show your appreciation by buying me a coffee.

I use the 7D, and have had quite a bit of fun with it. I suspect you will tire quickly with the lens, but even throwing on a 50mm 1.8 opens up quite a bit.
You mention being frustrated with the shutter lag… That is part of the beauty of an SLR vs. many point and shoots. Shutter lag will be a thing of the past. You certainly don’t need 8fps to address this issue, though.
I don’t really use the video function, but from what I have seen, it seems rather robust.
Good luck!
Peter
Thanks for that bit of information Peter. Do you have a link to some of the photos you’ve taken with the camera, just so I can see the quality of the photos it can produce?

Hi
Is this camera worth buying, and what does it cost?
Sure, depending on what you want it to do, and the cost is at the bottom of the post.

I’m looking to make an upgrade myself. I’m thinking of the Nikon d700 but this is a good camera to consider as well (I’m not too invested into Nikon lenses to make the switch cost prohibitive.)

Hey James, I may have to look at the Nikon next to see how it stacks up.
I have just upgraded from a Nikon D60 over to the Canon 7D a few months back. It has been amazing! I have been pushing it lately in different situations, to see how well and how usable ISO 3200 and ISO 6400 are. I must say, I am blown away! The 8fps is awesome as well, especially with the amazing tracking abilities! I love to shoot automotive type photography like drag racing, and this camera makes it just too easy!

I’m glad you found the camera you’ve always wanted Kevin. I’ve actually just bought the Canon EOS 550D, and am still learning all it’s features. Once I get my head around it I’ll do a post on it.
We have the Canon 5D Mark II and a 50D, but no 7D. I’ve tried the kit lens out, and it’s a solid lens to start with. Super fast autufocus and feels sturdy.
