Do you remember that post I did some time back on How A Different Perspective Can Change The Photo? Will I wanted to show you a few more photos of a particular subject matter, in this case the beautiful bird of paradise flower. This post is actually the third in the series discussing changing the way you approach your subject matter, the last two being buildings.
OK, so let’s look at the first image which has this lovely flower set up with the dark green background of the bush.
Now let’s walk around the flower giving it a different background.
Using a shallow depth of field blurs the background making the flower stand out that much more. You will notice that taking a photo from the other side of the flower also changes the hue and colors slightly giving it a completely different look. Which one do you prefer and why?
So, remember that it’s always a good idea to walk around your subject, not only to get a different angle or perspective but to see how a change in background and lighting affects it.
In my next post I will show you how getting up close to the same subject matter can give your photo a real artistic feel about it.

Love the colors of the flower. And I agree about it being artistic. Thanks for the tip.

Actually James, the artistic part of it won’t be revealed until the next post.
I`m agree with you James, its a good photo. Sire you use a big aperture and this give a good effect (eter DOF) and you succeed to make good photo.
Both are good but I like the first one. The green in the background its more natural.
Yep, a big aperture, but the camera did it not me.
Great shot, what a lovely capture it is. I can smell the beautiful fragrance of this lovely flower.

To tell you the truth Maria, I’ve never been close enough to see whether or not the flower even has a fragrance.
Taking photos mean a lot of things – a lifestyle, a hobby and a job. Nowadays, there are a lot of teenagers that love to take photos but they don’t know all those tricks, but with the help of your website they will learn all the things they need – I have a few friends that would enjoy this website so I will recommend this website to them. Changing the angle from which you are taking a shot – indeed, changes the whole picture, it’s something extremely important. Thanks for sharing!

Great tip. So often, people miss out on the perfect shot because they stand on the wrong side of the subject. Taking a minute to try different views is always worth a try!

Thanks Larry. I’m not a professional photographer and so I like to keep the tips nice and simple so that everyone can get something from them.
I prefer the first one. The colors of the flower are fuller and more vibrant.
While the second picture requires a really shallow depth of field in order to put focus only on the flower, the first picture allows the photographer more leeway (can work with shallow or deep DOF) because there are less distractions to the eye. Just my personal opinion. :)
P.S. Never seen this flower before, but my friends say there are flowers of this kind in our city. Must be an expensive one. :)

Hey James, I have to agree with you, I also like the first one more, and for the same reasons you mentioned.
As for the flower, I’m not sure how much they sell for in the flower shops and this one lives in my front yard.

I’ll vote for the 1st picture. With that angle, the flower looks like a masterpiece appears to be bird with a crown. Funny, but its the result of my imagination because I haven’t seen a flower like this. Sometimes, different angles can give different interpretations to every viewer.

Yeah, that one is my favourite too Maria.

Can’t say from an artistic point of view, but i definitely like the first picture first. That’s because the background, though blurred, is all green and you can make live nature in the back. While in the second one i see asphalt, and that doesn’t sit well with me.

That’s a good point Mary. I could also have taken the photo from a lower viewpoint which would have used the sky as a background?

Great tip, great photo, great article! I like the second photo better, because colors seems to be more vivid. Is it because the background has more light?
Gee, I like the first one more for the same reason :winkle:
Funny how people see the same thing differently.

This is the most basic, yet useful advice. I find myself moving my subjects all around (people photography), when the most basic thing to do could be a simple 180! Great photo by the way I love the bird of paradise!

Great shot! Doesn’t the angle from which we look at things always change our perception of the reality? This flower is a great example of that!

Great perspective in emphasizing a subject Sire. A background really affects the whole picture so it’s important to consider it before taking a shot depending on the idea you want to emphasize to the audience.
Yep, unless the background is the focus of your photo it shouldn’t overtake your actual subject.
