Flowers Make For Great Photos

Yeah, I know some of you are going to call me a big girl because I love taking photos of flowers, but what can I say, flowers are really pretty, and can make for some really stunning photos.  The fact that no two flower is really alike means that there is always a huge scope for the amateur photographer to show his stuff.

Roses always make a popular photographic subject. You may pick a pinkish one;

A red one, whose petals look almost velvety;

Then again, perhaps one with a yellowish tinge to it.

Pale Yellow Rose

Perhaps we should take a shot of a single tulip;

Or a bed of tulips;

The Bird Of Paradise

Lighting and background are both very important in the composition of any photo. I’ve done a series of shots of one of the most beautiful and colorful flowers in the world. The plant is called the Bird of Paradise and derives the name from the flower shape which resembles a birds beak and head plumage, hence the name.

The first is a shot of the flower with the sky as a background.

Bird Of Paradise Sky

The next has a cloudy sky as a background.

Bird Of Paradise Clouds

And finally one with the garden as the background.

Bird Of Paradise Garden

Out of the three the last one is definitely, in my opinion too crowded and detracts from the flower itself. The same goes for the second one, which is unusual as clouds normally add to the character of the photo, so as far as I am concerned the best of the three would have to be the first photo.

Which is your favorite?

Backgrounds Can Make All The Difference

I’ve noticed that the background can make all the difference to a good photo. Sometimes if the photo is too busy, you blur the background to make the subject stand out more. Other times you may want everything crystal clear as it’s all important to the photo. Just as a little experiment I took three photos of daffodils with different backgrounds just to see how each one would turn out.

Red Daisy With Contrasting Background

You know, sometimes I wonder if a photographer should also be a botanist so that he would be able to accurately describe the photo he has taken. Well, seeing as how I am not a botanist I reckon I will just call this baby a pretty red flower. (It turns out that it is a daisy, no thanks to Google.)

I took this shot at my parents place and I like the way it stands out from the background, partly due to the DOF but mainly because of the colour contrast. It always helps when you allow the subject to take up most of the space as it helps to keep distractions out of the photo. Notice how the flower is virtually popping out of the screen. I have included this photo as part of my wallpaper changing program.
