How To Change The Sky Using Photoshop Elements

There are times when your driving past and you come across something that you want to take a photo of but you know the sky’s looking really dull and boring. Of course if you have all the time in the world you can always wait for it to change :smoke_tb: or you could come back some other time hoping mother nature is in a better mood. Then again you could always take the shot and hope for the best.

So, not wanting to just wait around you take a few shots and you continue your journey. Once you get home you load the photos onto your computer only to discover that the sky looks just as crappy now as it did then. What do you do?

Well, I’ve heard how people can do so many things with PhotoShop and seeing as how I bought PhotoShop Elements 8 only recently I decided to give it a go. At first I tried playing with the colors and stuff but I found that too time consuming. Then I thought about changing the sky altogether. So I used the magic wand, several times, to remove the sky. Then I went outside and took a shot of clouds from the front garden.

Having done that I used the photos of clouds as a separate layer and placed it behind the original photo. Here are before and after shots.

Pretty good huh? Still, there are some flaws if you look closely at the tree line. This is because of the original sky that can still be seen through the leaves. I wasn’t sure how to do that so I just left it. However, for those of you who want to get more I did find this post on Replacing The Sky In Photoshop Elements.

Flowers Make For Great Photos

Yeah, I know some of you are going to call me a big girl because I love taking photos of flowers, but what can I say, flowers are really pretty, and can make for some really stunning photos.  The fact that no two flower is really alike means that there is always a huge scope for the amateur photographer to show his stuff.

Roses always make a popular photographic subject. You may pick a pinkish one;

Pink Rose

A red one, whose petals look almost velvety;

Red Rose

Then again, perhaps one with a yellowish tinge to it.

Pale Yellow Rose

Perhaps we should take a shot of a single tulip;

Colorful Flower

Or a bed of tulips;

Whatever you choose you can be sure that the lighting you choose can make all the difference;

Red Flower

They can be a delicate simple flower;

Violet Flower

Or and intricate busy one complete with bugs.

Onion Flower

Whatever flower you choose, you can be sure that photo options they can provide is almost endless.

Relaxing Pool Of Water At First Falls Adelaide

There is nothing more relaxing than the sound of water as it rushes over pebbles down a creek bed and then over a small waterfall. This pool of water was only meters from Waterfall Gully’s First Falls.

First Falls Pool

We are currently in the midst of a drought here in South Australia and so the flow of water is minimal at the moment. I would love to come back after a considerable drop of rain to see what the difference would be.

Silverband Falls In The Grampians Victoria

This is a shot of the Silverband Falls located in The Grampians Victoria, just south of Halls Gap. This particular waterfall is quite unique in that the water disappears into the ground and reappears further down. As you can see the photo was taken with a slow shutter speed to give the water a flowing effect. Unfortunately there wasn’t enough light to use a fast shutter speed to ‘freeze’ the water flow, maybe next time. :smirk2_ee:

Using A Silhouette To Frame Your Photo

While strolling around it is always good to look for unique photographic opportunities. After awhile when you look at your surroundings it’s almost as if you are looking through a camera’s viewfinder, or these days the LCD screen. On many an occasion you will be able to use some of your surroundings to actually frame your selected image. On this particular occasion I used the silhouette of some plants to frame this picture I took at Hamilton Island.
